Divisional play introduced as PIFL adds new teams
The Richmond Raiders and the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) are excited to announce the 2014 game schedule. The Raiders begin the season on the road March 30 against the Trenton Freedom. The Raiders’ home opener will be on April 12, when the Alabama Hammers come to town for a rematch of last season’s PIFL Championship Game. The Raiders remain at home on April 19 against the Harrisburg Stampede. The twelve game regular season will include six home games at the Richmond Coliseum with the 2014 season bringing expanded activities and entertainment for fans. Additional regular season home dates include May 17, May 24, June 6, and June 21.
The 2014 season marks the Raiders’ fifth anniversary of professional indoor football in the Richmond Coliseum, and third in the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL). The team has reached the league’s championship game in each of the last two seasons and has the league’s best home record (13-1) over that span. Season and group event tickets are on sale now with individual game tickets going on sale in 2014.
The PIFL’s membership for the 2014 season stands at eight teams, with two teams new to the league. For the first time, the league will be divided into two conferences to promote nearby rivalries. In the National Conference, the Raiders will be joined by Trenton, Harrisburg, and Lehigh Valley. The American Conference will consist of Alabama; Columbus and Albany, Georgia; and Nashville. The top two teams in each conference will qualify for the playoffs and face each other for the respective conference championships the weekend of July 5. The conference champions will play for the PIFL Championship at the home of the team with the best regular season record the weekend of July 12.
“We’re looking forward to beginning our 2014 season, and we’re excited to celebrate our fifth anniversary in Richmond with what we believe are the best fans in the league, who give us a real home field advantage,” said Raiders’ business general manager Tim Hurley. “We know with the quality of teams across the PIFL that the road ahead will be challenging. Starting with our games against the great teams in our division, qualifying for the playoffs will be tougher than ever. Add in a game against the reigning champions and trips to two very tough road environments in Columbus and Albany, and it all adds up to a demanding season week in and week out. So we are highly focused on recruiting and adding new relationships to take our strength training and practice facilities to a whole new level.”
Each home game will again feature a theme with contests, fun exhibits, giveaways, prizes, the unparalleled Lady Raiders dance team and other great entertainment throughout the night. “We are also bringing some new features to the Coliseum that will make a night with the Raiders even more fun for the whole family, from pre-game activities to the postgame autograph session on the field,” Hurley said.
2014 season and group event tickets are now on sale via on the Raiders’ website, www.RichmondRaidersProFootball.com, and the Raiders’ ticket hotline at 804-780-0430.
